What We Have Accomplished
Women's Opportunity Awards
Since 1972, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards program has provided women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare or any other education-related expense. The Fremont club will provide a cash grant to its award recipient, who will then advance to the Soroptimist Founder Region level, where one recipient will receive $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist $10,000 awards.
Violet Richardson Awards
The Violet Richardson Award honors young women, between the ages of 14 and 17, for volunteer action such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty.
Installation
The Charter party, held in March 2002 was hosted and catered
by SI Alameda. It was a Saturday afternoon tea party to be remembered.
SI Fremont chartered with 32 members and JoEllen King was installed
as our first President. She receives credit for promoting the new
organization in Fremont and recruiting the new memberships.
Pretty
Bags - The SI Fremont members collected and donated full size
soaps, shampoos, nail polishes, brushes and combs by the hundreds.
Also donated were small cosmetic bags to insert the items in to.
The members got together one evening and packaged the toiletries
into the bags. The bags were then presented to the local women in
the SAVE shelters for the holidays.
